Community Feedback Sought on Standards

The Academic Standards Review Commission (ASRC), charged with reviewing the North Carolina’s adopted academic standards (the Common Core), needs your input.

\"AcademicThe Department of Public Instruction has launched an online survey to collect community feedback on the standards.  The survey offers an opportunity to review grade-level standards in math and English language arts.  Participants will see each standard and be offered an option to say the standard is fine as written or the standard needs to be re-written.  A comment box allows the participant provide recommendations.

During the January meeting of the commission, survey results from North Carolina teachers were shared (English language arts and math).  They were overwhelmingly positive, and supported the adopted standards as written.

A draft timeline of work was shared during the February meeting.  It is concerning that the ASRC is beginning work on new standard recommendations in March before hearing from more stakeholder groups in April.  Of greatest concern is that the ASRC is not considering the standards as written, even with surveys showing overwhelming teacher support.  Further, the ASRC is not considering any revisions to standards in their work plan.

Wake Education Partnership supports rigorous academic standards that prepare students for college and career success.  We encourage you to take the online survey.  Be sure that actively seek ways to share the business community’s support for high standards with the commission.
