Review of Common Core Begins in North Carolina

It’s a standing room only kind of week. On Monday, September 22nd the commission charged with reviewing the Common Core in NC met for the first time – and nary a seat remained in the room. As expected, the commission’s first meeting drew lots of interest and media coverage.

As we discussed in our last issue, an 11-member commission has been charged to review the Common Core Standards for North Carolina. All members of the commission have been named.

Dr. Olivia Oxendine, Robeson
Gubernatorial Appointment
Mr. Andre Peek, Wake

Two co-chairs were named. Mr. Andre Peek, Wake is an IBM executive. Ms. Jeannie A. Metcalf is a member of the Winston-Salem Forsyth School Board.

The commission, which meets monthly, agreed to first learn more about the standards, and then made decisions on conducting surveys and getting feedback from various stakeholders. The group has until December 2015 to conduct its review and make recommendations to the State Board of Education.
