WakeEd\’s 5th Annual World Cafe

The 5th annual World Cafe for STEM and Global Schools, sponsored by Biogen, BASF and Wells Fargo, was a tremendous success! Business, organization, government and education leaders from the Wake County community came together on Wednesday, Feb. 8 to support educators in bringing real-world, 21st century learning to local classrooms and schools.

WakeEd Partnership and the Wake County Public School System hosted the event at Biogen\’s Research Triangle Park location again this year with 46 schools and 41 organizations represented. Twenty-six organizations returned in 2017 and fifteen participated in the event for the first time. Bayer Crop Science, The CW22, Gilbane Building Company and the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences sent multiple teams to work with educators on their classroom or school-wide projects.

At the event, students and educators from four schools pitched their innovative project ideas to a panel of judges during the Idea Crucible, which is fashioned after the popular television show Shark Tank. Carroll Magnet Middle School, East Garner Magnet Middle School, and Hilburn Academy walked away with $1,000 Teacher Innovation Grants to fund their projects, and Wiley International Studies Magnet Elementary School received the grand prize of $3,000. Wiley educators will use this grant to build a collaborative Global Learning Lab in their school Media Center.
