Programs and Experiences

This is a description of major WakeEd Programs and the opportunities for internships with each of the programs. The description each internship focus provides a general overview of the majority of the activities to be completed during a semester of work. Programs internships may be completed during the Fall and/or Spring semesters.

First Steps in Literacy Programs

This program includes two major areas of work: Partners Read and WAKE Up & Read.

Partners Read places community volunteers into WCPSS schools to read with struggling first grade readers. The program occurs each semester.

Internship Opportunity: Fall & Spring

Focus: Identify new sources of funding to support the purchase of books for the program; develop contacts list and make outreach to generate new partner organizations and volunteers to expand program; evaluate program impact using anecdotal and quantitative measures; promote program through social media

WAKE Up & Read: WakeEd serves on the leadership team for this community collaborative. A major focus of the collaborative is its annual book drive that places 110,000+ books in the hands of students at 10 WCPSS elementary schools

Internship Opportunity: Fall & Spring

Focus: Coordinating with book drive committee to increase collection sites, organize volunteers to participate in sort, set-up, and distribution of books

STEMpact

Two programs define our work in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math): World Cafe and SummerSTEM.

World Café partners business and industry with WCPSS schools for innovative projects that support STEM and Global Schools in their implementation of their school’s specific themes. The main event happens in January with projects occurring throughout the second semester.

Internship Opportunity: Fall

Focus: Identify and contact new business partners to engage them in World Café event; develop materials to support actual event; participate in matching process that assigns businesses and school

Internship Opportunity: Spring

Focus: Track submission and implementation of project plans; create multimedia stories that demonstrate the impact of World Café event in January and throughout the spring semester; develop data collection systems and evaluate success of event through overall impact to students and teachers

SummerSTEM is an 8 day professional development experience for educators that integrates project-based learning with immersion in STEM industries. The initial workshops occur during the summer; two follow-up days are held in the first semester; and the culminating event, STEMposium, is held in May.

Internship Opportunity: Fall

Focus: Support and attend SummerSTEM follow-up days; collect stories of the impact of SummerSTEM on teachers and students for sharing via social media and in various WakeEd publications; assist with planning STEMposium

Internship Opportunity: Spring

Focus: Assist with planning and attend STEMposium; review and summarize key indicators of the impact of SummerSTEM; assist with the writing of the program evaluation for the year

Teacher Innovation Grants

Teacher Innovation Grants are a “venture capital” program that invests in teachers’ innovative ideas to support WCPSS Vision 2020. WakeEd’s competitive grants program is a yearlong process for teachers beginning in the spring with applications and following in the fall with implementation of grants that are selected for these investments.

Internship Opportunity: Fall

Focus: Visit schools and collect data on the actual implementation of the grants; interview teachers to learn about their innovative ideas and the impact on their students to create publishable articles for WakeEd media outlets; review and revise grant application and training materials; create recognition materials and supporting documents for Stars of Education event

Internship Opportunity: Spring

Focus: Analyze mid-year program data to determine impact of grants on students, teachers, and schools; support grant writing workshops and grant reader training

WakeEd Activities are immersed throughout all internship experiences. Interns are encouraged to participate in the following:

  • Attend WakeEd events, including meetings, as your schedule allows, to support personal networking.
  • Monitor WakeEd communications to increase understanding of WakeEd to align with specific programs that the internship supports
